Parent’s policy: You can stay covered under your dad’s or mom’s health insurance plan as long as you’re staying registered in the college as full-time student. Under the new health care regime through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, beginning from September 2010, the dependent children can stay covered under their parent’s policy till the age of 26. The age limit earlier for similar protection was 21 years.

However, if you have decided to stay covered in your parent’s policy make sure that the policy coverage is extended beyond the geographical area of where your parents live. You may find yourself without coverage at the time of need if your parent’s plan is of HMO type and doesn’t cover out of home students.

University health insurance plan: Many of the Universities and colleges now have student health insurance, offered in collaboration with private health insurance providers. Check out with the admission office of your college, if it offers the health insurance to students or not. These policies are often low cost and affordable.

Private health policies: You can approach to a private health insurance carrier for a policy. However, an individual health plan can be expensive and hence you may need to shop around to find the best deal. Further, the private health care insurer can also discriminate against you based on your existing health condition.

They must evaluate the pros and cons of allowing third parties to access their information. You must thoroughly evaluate all your options before waiving your HIPAA privacy and security protection.
